As a wheelchair user born with Cerebral Palsy in the 90s, medical professionals didn’t expect me to achieve much in my life. It was only through being supported to battle with my adversity that I began to defy their expectations. As an adult, I’m determined to ensure that people who are in adverse situations have the opportunity and support to overcome their hardships, and live the life that they aspire to. I’ve been able to begin the journey to achieving this goal through my work with Boingboing.
Boingboing is a social enterprise based in Brighton, UK. It has the following objectives:
- To support marginalised communities such as those with physical disabilities, like me, to build resilience.
- To confront unchallenged social injustices that force people experiencing hardship to be resilient.
I’ve been working with Boingboing for the past two years as a Trainer, Participation and Project worker. I’ve gained ample experience presenting on the subject of resilience. I’ve also co-facilitated at different events including an Economic and Social Research Council consultation event on mental health.
I’m very excited to be given the opportunity to co-facilitate at the Well-Making and Making-well: building new approaches to inclusivity through co-creative social design session. It’s a great opportunity to meet designers and makers and hopefully also fellow resilience enthusiasts and to showcase Boingboing’s work. I look forward to seeing you all there.
